Diversity & Inclusion Charter

The CIOB’s Special Report provides data and case studies demonstrating that a commitment to diversity and inclusion is a matter of individual business’ survival in the built environment sector.

The report includes the Diversity & Inclusion Charter, which outlines five key steps you can commit to making in order to move your organisation in the right direction.

These steps are adaptable to any organisation size and operating environment, with the aim of helping all organisations to be more welcoming, inclusive and accessible.

“While some construction organisations have advanced quite far along the path to diversity and inclusion, and are starting to see results, it is important to keep in mind that every organisation begins where they are.”

The Five Key Charter Commitments

The important thing is to acknowledge where we are, make a plan, be transparent, and keep moving forward.

  1. Show Leadership: Demonstrate visible senior leadership by highlighting the business benefits of D&I in both internal and external messaging and action.
  2. Make a plan: Create a plan, including targets where appropriate, to address under-representation, reduce identified pay gaps, and ensure equitable development and progression for all.
  3. Shape the culture: Display messages promoting an inclusive culture and making it clear that discriminatory language or inappropriate behaviour will not be tolerated.
  4. Be transparent: Publish an annual report detailing the progress made against our targets and setting out your plans for the next 12 months.
  5. Be accountable: Demonstrate board-level accountability by assigning responsibility for these Charter commitments to the CEO or a named Director.
